/dev/sda is not a proper device name for an ESP, as ESP stands for EFI System *Partition*. This appears to be a misconfiguration of grub which you should be able to correct by running 'sudo dpkg-reconfigure grub-common' and selecting the correct partition.

Reassigning this bug report to grub2; it's possible something further should be done to automatically detect this incorrect configuration.
