"Secure Boot" was already "disabled.
Apparently, setting also "LegacySupport" to "disabled" has solved the problem.

The issue may be related to an update of "linux-firmware" package.
Laptop is a Latitude E7450 (062E) with Dell BIOS A13 version in Secure Boot mode.

lsb_release -rd
Description: Ubuntu 18.04.4 LTS
Release: 18.04

Update of grub-efi-amd64-signed package:
Paramétrage de grub-efi-amd64-signed (1.93.16+2.02-2ubuntu8.15) ...
Installation pour la plate-forme x86_64-efi.
Could not delete variable: Invalid argument
grub-install : erreur : efibootmgr n'a pas réussi à enregistrer l'entrée de démarrage: Bloc de périphérique requis.
(translation: efibootmgr failed to register the boot entry: Block device required.)

@tormec: when you say you have to enter "Recovery Mode", is it a suggested option following a reboot?

@dabfus: yes, because I did it a reboot after I installed the upgrades but the screen remains completely black. So I restarted with "Alt + Stamp + B", then "Advanced Option for Ubuntu" and finally "Ubuntu, with Linux *.*.*-*-generic (recovery mode)". In the next "Recovery Menu" I choose "Resume Normal Boot" (which gave me the possibility to save all my files!).

@Tormec: thanks for the advice! I'll wait in the hope of an update but I'm afraid the issue is related to my old BIOS version ...

@dabfus: in #4 you wrote that "Secure Boot" is "enabled" and since I managed to solve the problem with "Secure Boot" and "Legacy Support" (or whatever it's called under your Bios) both "disabled" have you tried to do the same (with all the necessary precautions)?

@Alin: This is probably not the same issue:
"gerror: efibootmgr failed to register the boot entry: Input/output error"

The problem described here is:
"error: efibootmgr failed to register the boot entry: Block device required"

Other (maybe too old) bug entries on LaunchPad seem more specific to the problem you're experiencing:

I finally ended up rebooting and there was no problem (the efibootmgr entries were good).
