And I just had exactly the same problem (failure to modify EFI variable) during update of secureboot-db and again running postinstall script immediately after reboot worked OK.
Silence is becoming ridiculous. What we need is kernel with verbose debug output about handling EFI variables. Right now it is not even clear whether failure is returned by kernel or firmware.
