I wonder why you think it is linux which has a problem
considering that
   - Ubuntu's kernel boot from both lilo and grub 0.91
   - I don't get the menu from Ubuntu's grub

I'm not an expert in debugging grub... I'd have given
you the fix instead of reporting the problem :-)
