Funny, I had this work somewhat backwards. I installed Kubuntu after Ubuntu and when Ubuntu tried to upgrade, well, Kubuntu had already overwritten the boot sector so the upgrade wasn't able to boot with the new kernel. Instead it kept getting whatever Kubuntu had put in at the time I installed it. :)
