The grub stage of installation should give a reminder of partitions

Bug #19441 reported by Joachim Noreiko on 2005-08-04
Affects Status Importance Assigned to Milestone
grub-installer (Ubuntu)

Bug Description

The Ubuntu installation phase that asks the user where to install the grub
loader should give an option to view the partition table, showing the partitions
listed in the two formats that grub can use.
I hadn't noted the numbers of my partitions and had to go back to the
partitioning stage. Even though I made no changes, just looked at what I'd
previously done, the installation broke down. I seemed to be trapped in a loop,
going back to accept or cancel the changes to the partition table and then being
told grub hadn't been installed properly.
Even if I had noted the numbers while partitioning, these are in the format
"#5", and I'm not sure how that translates to the /dev/hda0 format grubb accepts.

Yes, the grub install question at the end of the installation is very confusing.
It should at least list the possible options.
Preferably, not ask at all, but do the right thing?

I installed Kubuntu today on a machine that has a SATA drive and a regular ATA
drive. I use the SATA drive to boot, but grub was installed on the ATA drive. No
biggy, once i realised this, since you can easily change it in the bios of the
machine, but a simple question or some kind of dialogue box would have been nice.

I would prefer it asks : mbr, install partition, or manual. And this even if no other systems detected !

Changed in grub-installer:
assignee: kamion → nobody
importance: Medium → Wishlist
status: Unconfirmed → Confirmed

I think the installer is smarter about this now, anyone have an issue with this?

Colin Watson (cjwatson) wrote :

Ernst: err, yes, I have an issue with that because it isn't true; grub-installer hasn't been changed to do this. Please leave this bug open.

Colin: I think this can be closed now then!
