Eventually I abandoned this. The installer always made encouraging 'nearly there' comments before hard-crashing with around 85% files copied. The check of install media found no problems, with either release or daily images, and I had tried shrinking the windows partitions by different amounts before reformatting /, swap and /home, and with or without a second efi partition and nomodeset.
