So

  gconftool -g /desktop/gnome/volume_manager/autoprinter

prints 'true' for you? The default is 'false', because autoprinter detection is broken. Did you manually enable it?

Yep, it prints true. The only thing I had done was set up the printer
before I had ever turned the printer on.

come to think of it, I carried over my .gconf from my previous install...
was it set true by default on Breezy?

autoprinter is 'false' by default in breezy final's version, but it was indeed true for some time before. I assume you installed breezy when it was still a development version? Also, ~/.gconf only contains settings that you manually touched. It is impossible to change these on package upgrades. So, to fix it for you, please reset the gconf key:

  gconftool -g /desktop/gnome/volume_manager/autoprinter

(or use gconf-editor)

Sorry for that, and thanks for your help!
