I upgraded from Ubuntu 9.04 to Ubuntu 10.04 LTS - the Lucid Lynx and I had the same problem.

gnome-system-log - Version 2.30.0

This is also work for my system:
Running 'gconftool-2 --recursive-unset /apps/gnome-system-log' fixed the issue.
