Bug Description

the gnome-tweak-tool window keeps flickering abnormally. this might be a bug as i have seen somebody else mention the issue somewhere in the internet.

i do have the screencast of the phenomenon i can send it to you for the review of the problem i am facing.

i am on ubuntu 19.10 system installed via bootable usb. before i had interrupted network upgrade of the system which was recovered via grub recovery mode. since i thought the flickering was due to all this, i fresh installed the system via bootable usb.

still the problem is persistent and its abnormal irrespective of the animation button turned on or off.

Thanks. Does the problem only occur in Wayland sessions?

it was in default desktop session when i freshly installed it. when i realized the problem, i decided to download gnome-vanilla-desktop with the hope that problem won't transfer in different desktop environment and only with no luck.

i had been using 18.10 and 19.04 in the same device earlier where i did not have such issues regarding graphics transition.

Just to confirm, on the login screen please try both 'Ubuntu' and 'Ubuntu on Wayland'. Do they both have the same bug?

yeah, i tried both the condition and yes the problem is equally persistent in both the cases. moreover what i realized is when the mouse hovers over one of the menus in gnome tweak box, it assumes it as the click input and keep dancing between the menu pressed and non pressed situation.

a sort of misinterpreted mouse input scenario in that particular application.

hope this be solved.

I can confirm the bug, exact same behavior here. Upgraded from ubuntu 19.04 and same flickering effect.

 * I open the Tweak tool window
 * I try to hover one of the left menu's items -> it flickers, I can not manage to click on a menu item sucessfully
 * If I resize the window (I have to make it larger so that the menu displays larger), then the menu works as expected and the flickering effect disappears - I have to do it everytime I launch the app, though.

Well, the same problem happens in the "Parameters" dashboard. If I get it well, there are three breakpoints:

 * no left-menu displayed
 * a narrow left-menu displayed
 * a larger left-menu displayed

In the case of a narrow left menu, flicker happens at least in the Tweak tool and Parameters app. See attached screenshot (flickering happens at a much higher framerate than the gif displays it, as if width were computed in a loop)

Additional information: The above rapid flickering on cursor hover in GNOME-tweak occurs even after:

1) Removing <email address hidden> (a window decoration multi-function extension) -- no effect
2) Disabling ALL gnome-shell-extensions and restarting -- no effect

I don't think that this is a conflict between gnome-shell-extensions. I have restored both of the above, as they aren't causing additional problems.

Ubuntu 19.10
5.3.0-26-generic x86_64
GNOME Shell 3.34.1
occurs under both Wayland AND X11

SOLVED: I found the fix for the gnome-tweak tool. In my case, it turns out the rapid flickering occurs when Animations is disabled in the GENERAL page of GNOME-tweak. Re-enabling Animations stopped the window flicker. There is another minor artifact -- the Close-Minimize-Maximize-Search icons disappear from the application bar when using "<" to return to the main menu. But they do reappear when further clicking on page links in the left menu. The page link menu and the page menus display separately now in independent windows -- and this was the initial behavior I remember before disabling Animations.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ABOUT WINDOW TITLEBAR BUTTONS AND TOP BAR BUTTONS (GNOME-TWEAK-TOOL ONLY)

If you have installed Unite (a window decoration multi-function extension, store in .<email address hidden>):

Window titlebar and Top Bar buttons do not "slide" off the titlebars out of sight if buttons are configured to display in Unite > Appearance > Top bar window buttons position > RIGHT or LAST or AUTO

In the GNOME-tweak-tool Main Menu, the setting for Window Titlebars > Placement may also introduce a conflict in the way window button animations occur in GNOME-tweak if they don't match the Unite settings (however, Unite includes an AUTO setting which might be used to avoid this.)

As is warned in the Ubuntu Software tool, GNOME-shell-extensions can cause settings conflicts, depending on which extensions one is running. So your mileage may vary. Notably, the options in some of the extensions displayed in GNOME-tweak-tool are no longer available by clicking on the gear icon. -- However, I found that these options can be changed in Ubuntu Software > Addons > Shell Extensions > Extensions Settings (button.) GNOME-shell-integration with extensions in web browsers have been disabled in Ubuntu 19.10, and now GNOME-tweak-tool seems to be losing functionality as well, all being superceded by the Ubuntu Software tool.

I tried the workaround, and that did help, but only once. After that, the flickering returned even after uninstalling and reinstalling the Tweaks app. Rebooting after uninstalling and before reinstalling also did not help.

Workaround: I discovered that widening the app window by dragging on the right side stopped the Flickering.

I encountered the same issue. I was planning to reinstall OS as restarting/shuting down/reinstall application did not help. This issue started happening after changing placement left to right in window titlebars. If the placement is changed from left to right/right to left, the flickering is appearing and menus in gnome tweak box are not registering/clickable. So, above solution worked for me. Resize the gnome tweak then change the placement setting then close it. Everything should be normal after that as long as you do not touch/move the settings of placement . Thanks, Xavier (xavierl) for solution.
