I can remove the menubar by selecting "display menubar" 2 times in the menu.
First time, it does nothing. Second time, it works.
So, we shall say it's "half-broken".
It has nothing to do with "global menu". I'm not using Unity. I'm using Gnome Shell.
It's really annoying : Alt-D isn't usable in bash, and I use this shortcut a lot.
