I've just spent the day using mutt on gnome-terminal for the first time since I reported this, and it appears fine now - I guess it got fixed somewhere in the last year or so.
It also seems to stand up to a cat /bin/ls in a terminal window with out any droppings being left behind.
For the record, my current terminal setup is 'use system terminal font'.
