Why is this bug marked as incomplete? What information is missing?
I can reliably reproduce it several times a day. It's quite annoying. But I've also found this works better than restarting X:
Press Ctrl+Alt+F1 to go to a console, then run
DISPLAY=":0.0" gnome-shell
