I have the same problem, my gnome-shell version is 3.2.0-0ubuntu1 and ubuntu 11.10, if I execute 'gnome-shell --replace' by normal user, it can't works, and no titlebar, menus at all, and has appear below message:
(gnome-shell:8361): Clutter-WARNING **: Whoever translated default:LTR did so wrongly.

If I execute 'sudo gnome-shell --replace', it works, and has appear below message:
