This issue is also a problem when using synergy for input device sharing, or virtual machines (see https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=569830). In addition, there is a significant delay whilst the screen is locked, during which time input is still accepted and could be used maliciously. It is a security issue and should be fixed.

I think the attitude of the gnome-screensaver team is clear from their FAQ:

"Why doesn't my screen lock when I'm logged in as root?

gnome-screensaver will blank the screen but will not lock. This is for security reasons. Seriously, it is very unwise to login as root in the first place. Try logging in as an unprivileged user and using sudo or su instead. "

This is INSANE. Deliberately create an even bigger problem to force people to do things your way?!
