This morning, I managed to trigger this bug again. I installed a new component from the Activities/Search view. The component installed without requiring any authentication, but 30 minutes later, the offending authentication dialog image appeared on the screen.
I believe there are probably two different bugs here:
1. In the ubuntu software install, there is probably a thread synchronization defect that allows software to install without authentication.
2. Separately gnome shell appears to paint widgets even though there is apparently no logic/process attached to the widget.
