it is suggested that

"The issue is caused by an old Unity app-indicator which is in the system autostart. Remove it with sudo apt remove indicator-application and reboot."

I did not want to mess up the system, so I did not try it before confirming. But is it possible that this is the cause and the suggestion is a viable fix?
