Just installed Ubuntu 18.04 LTS on HP EliteBook 8470p. Got the same error on fresh boot. It probebly was because of ubuntu now uses screen rotation gyro(?) and started to rotate screen. Anyway, to steps to fix.

1. CTRL+ALT+F2 to get into console.
2. Login
3. Do https://linuxconfig.org/how-to-disable-wayland-and-enable-xorg-display-server-on-ubuntu-18-04-bionic-beaver-linux
4. Do https://askubuntu.com/questions/1035209/how-to-turn-off-screen-rotation-in-ubuntu-18-04-lts
