Bug Description

This bug is found in Artful.

Desktop icons goes under the Dock, if the Dock is set to auto-hide.

Either the Dock should auto-hide on the Desktop as well, or the Desktop Icons should leave a margin with the same size of the Dock.

This happen both horizontal and vertical Dock positions.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

I believe this is a feature and not a bug. Most people using auto-hide do so because they want to use their full desktop width, which includes putting icons on the left edge of the desktop. So for many/most users of auto-hide the current behaviour is probably best.

Workaround: You also have the option of simply moving your icons to a place where they are never covered.

P.S. The desktop and its icons are rendered by 'nautilus-desktop' from the 'nautilus' source package.

I think people hide the launcher because they want their apps to take most of the screen real estate, only a few people would auto-hide to have the extended desktop space.

This physically looks ugly and is something that should be fixed before release, IMO.

In my system, the dock is set to hide automatically, but it does not hide and also partially covers the desktop icons. I'm using Ubuntu 18.04 64bit, everything up to date (gnome-shell-extension-ubuntu-dock version 0.9.1).

No one would like there icons behind the dock.

There are two alternatives:
1) To reserve the space under the dock (to make the margin bigger) so the icons don't get there.
or
2) To auto-hide even when on the desktop

Is it possible to just create an option on the right click menu to choose alignment options for the desktop icons? Like, to the left, to the right, top or bottom. That would solve this issue. Or have the dock always hide (triggered by mouse hover) when the desktop is shown.

The "desktop-icons" extension is deprecated and was replaced by "desktop-icons-ng", so this isn't really relevant to the former. For newer releases it seems to be marked as fixed already so I suggest opening a new bug.
