Same here on a Lenovo Thinkpad W510. The brightness sliider in settings does not work as well as the hardware keys. I am using Nvidia drivers. What is also interesting is that I rebooted 2 times before now and the hardware keys did not even bring up the brightness slider overlay on the top right, but after the latest reboot it appears it is back but just doesn't do anything.
