And on restarting the gnome.settings-daemon in a terminal window as logged in user (that is not root)

i got this in the debug output

** (gnome-settings-daemon:8702): WARNING **: Name taken or bus went away - shutting down
** (gnome-settings-daemon:8702): DEBUG: Shutting down

The third line looks like the culprit.
What bus? What name?
