Keyboard layout indicator doesn't show layout

In 10.10 there is indicator icon, but it shows only keyboard icon. See the screenshot.

I don't quite understand. The indicator doesn't show active layout at all, no text like US, UK, RU or similar, no flags, it doesn't work at all. Is it not a bug?

The only way to tell what the layout is active now is too look at the led indicator on keyboard, but normally I don't see keyboard, its under my desk.

There also seems no way to remove the indicator (since it is not working, no need in it).

Sorry, at a first moment i've thinked that it was so, but now i've tried to reproduce it, but it works as expected, see the two screenshoot.

I am not able to reproduce it here too. Have you checked if you have configured more layouts in gnome-keyboard-properties?

I've found the bug report https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/663630

It's caused by removing notification area, in that case keyboard indicator moves to tray. The ability to remove notification area should be disabled (at least in GUI), since it is not supported by ubuntu.
