Bug Description

I upgraded from Ubuntu 10.04 to Ubuntu 10.10

Keyboard layout indicator has no icons or labels and there is no way to know which layout is currently active.
Switching between layouts is working fine.
Please see the attached screenshots.

That issue you see is with the notification area / system tray. By default that appears as a keyboard menu in the indicator applet, where the selected layout is visible on the side. You're getting a different experience because you appear to have removed the indicator applet.

So, this can't be a papercut because it doesn't affect the default experience. This may be an upstream issue, but I'm not sure what Ubuntu's patches change here. Can anyone confirm whether this happens with upstream's keyboard indicator?
I don't have time to check myself, but I suggest searching http://bugzilla.gnome.org/ :)

not able to reproduce it here under Ubuntu Maverick ,I have just added a second keyboard layout and is displayed fine with ambiance theme, by the way, there is not a keyboard applet available under Maverick because is dispatched automatically when you add an entra layout with gnome-keyboard-properties)

Requiring Indicator Applet to correctly show keyboard layout (or else you get just a dumb icon) is a *bad decision* and yes it's very annoying. Can't believe what the Gnome programmers are focused on these days...
