Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-session

The Gnome splash screen was removed by default on Gutsy as apparently it "slows down login". I believe this is a poor decision that needs to be changed.

1) The splash screen improves the overall impression a user gets from Ubuntu. Booting from login screen to Gnome desktop can take up to 5 seconds depending on setup (or more in slower setups). Without the splash screen the user gets the impression Ubuntu is "stuck" at this point. Looking at a brown color background for some seconds isn't good for the much wanted Ubuntu "polish".

So I think that even if the splash screen is slowing the login (why? how much?) there are some advantages in using it.

2) With the graphical splash, the login sound is gone as well. Why is that? Almost all desktop OS have some kind of "welcome" sounds.

3) Even when you select "Play System Sounds" and enable the "Login" sound in System -> Preferences -> Sound, nothing happens while the splash is disabled. Thus the user is changing a setting that affects nothing.

Bottom line, I think this change needs to be reconsidered.

Thank you for your bug. A bug should describe on issue, closing this one which list random things, some of those are duplicate. The splash screen question should be sent on a list like ubuntu-devel-discuss where users can comment

Thanks for the fast reply.

However I think its not really a duplicate as I suggest that the splash screen comes back (the sound is just one part of the bug report).

I think that is not a duplicate of bug #129029. I occurred the same problem. When i log into the gnome there is no gnome splash a there is no login sound. When I log off the gnome there is no sound too. I investigated that it may be connected with at-spi, becouse when I get message that "no supporting technologies are used, check if you have at-spi installed" (translated form polish so I don't know if it sounds the same, but sense is not missed) then i can hear sound when logging into gnome.

I have a question for afonic: Do you use Compiz Fusion? (especially from Trevino repository - not officially supported)

no, i'm not using compiz-fusion from trevino, but from official repository
even if there are not plugins.
--> reduced effects.

After Today's gdm update there was enabled sound when login screen appears. The rest (sound and splash when loading gnome) remain the same - i.e. they don't appear.

I asked about C-F becouse I thought that the problem is connected with it. I think today's update showed that it's not .

we have a P3 450Mhz (512MB) slow machine that takes a minute or so to display a full working desktop (gnome) after we choose the login user. in this time we just look at an empty screen with no visual indication of any login progress. suddenly we here the login sound (which is redundant, especially if we want to optimize stuff) but it stays (visually) the same until half a minute later it start showing the desktop's toolbars...

please see if you can enable some minimal "desktop is load..." indication. (change the cursor, maybe?)

kindly,
nadav :-)
