I have a very similar problem to dafrabbit on 2007-08-25. I'm using Ubuntu 7.10 Alternative Tribe 5.

1. GDM ready sound is not playing. As he suggested, System->Administration->Login Window->Accessibility and choosing a sound (question.wav) results in it working.

2. System login/logout sounds are not playing, though checking and playing them from the System->Preferences->Sound->System Sounds dialog box works fine....so the sound card is detected & working.

3. The system sounds aren't working, but again playing them from the System->Preferences->Sound->System Sounds dialog box, they work fine.
