I think I can reproduce the bug. After using gnome-splashscreen-manager to change my splash-screen, the gnome session crashed whenever I tried to log in. After the first start there was the "Your session lasted less than..." box mentioned above, after clicking ok, it crashed (but it was possible to work with the dialog in the background...). Logging in via safe gnome session and terminal+gnome-session still worked.
After reading this report I figured out that it might be the fault of the splash-screen. The image that reproducibly triggers the crash is the blubuntu splash screen from the blubuntu-session-splashes package.
I'm not sure how useful a valgrind run or similar is from the terminal session, because there nothing crashes...
