I found the cause of the annoyance. For some reason, the virtual keyboard (Onboard) is automatically set, probably by gnome-accesibility, to show up when the screen is locked. Launching Onboard Settings and unchecking "Show Onboard when unlocking the screen" obviously stops this behavior.
