I have found that it's a bit hit-and-miss in Unity, too. Unless I specially use CTRL-ALT-L to lock the screen, often when I come back and the screensaver is on, it doesn't ask for my password when I press a key. Sometimes it does ask for the password. I wonder if that is related?
