Some time after submitting that comment, I saw the screensaver activate on my laptop(!).

ps showed that gnome-screensaver had started approximately one minute after I had checked for it last.

Can either of you check whether gnome-screensaver does eventually start for you? It looks like it is simply delayed for some reason.
