The same problem on my HP Compaq 6735b. The brightness cannot be adjusted by Fn + F7/F8. The taskbar brightness applet doesn't work as well unfortunately. I tried on both Ubuntu 10.04 32bit and 64bit. On Ubuntu 9.10 there were no problem with brightness adjustment.
My ATI driver is installed.
