Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. The issue that you reported is one that should be reproducible with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the development release - Karmic Koala. It would help us greatly if you could test with it so we can work on getting it fixed in the next release of Ubuntu. You can find out more about the development release at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/. Thanks again and we appreciate your help.

Tested on Karmic Koala Alpha 3 64bit, same problem.
On Jaunty Jackalope Ubuntu 9.04 32bit and Kubuntu 32bit, too.

Is there anything I can do? Post any log files?

Thanks for checking in Karmic. To get this fix in Ubuntu, we should do all further debugging work for this bug in Karmic.

From a terminal enter:
apport-collect 378072

When that is done, enter:
1) dbus-monitor --session "type='signal',interface='org.freedesktop.PowerManagement.Backlight'"
2) Try changing the backlight (both with fn-keys and the applet)
3) report back here with the response from the terminal

Thanks in advance.

I executed your commands. Output ist attached.
Brightness didn't change, just the notification appeared as usual.

Should I do the same in Karmic?

Thanks! Yes, please do the same in Karmic. Once they are up we can
review the logs and see if any further information is needed.

Great, thanks for all the information.

From the dbus output it is evident that there are dbus signals going out, but GPM isn't acting on them or the devicekit-power doesn't have the right quirk for brightness control. Right now there are lots of brightness bugs with gnome-power-manager as it is switching over from using HAL to devicekit-power. I suggest that we continue to watch this bug for a little bit longer so that we can see if it has been fixed in newer releases of GPM.

If the bug still exists after GPM 2.27.3, we should submit this bug upstream. Instructions for submitting bugs upstream are found here:

The URL you submitted ist this bug, is this correct?

GPM 2.27.3 isn't released yet, am I right? I just found 2.27.2 on GNOME Ftp. Would it be helpful if I install GPM 2.27.3 when it will be released?
(Excuse my bad English please)

Another point is that my notebook needs a lot more energy since upgrading to Jaunty. 30Watts idle and much more with complex calculations. In Hardy ernegy consumption was about 25Watts.

Sorry about that, the URL got chopped up (bug #378072):
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-power-manager/+bug/378072

2.27.3 hasn't been released yet. We will add it to Karmic pretty soon
after it is released on the gnome ftp, so you shouldn't have to worry
about building it yourself. Just upgrading the package (in the Karmic
release) will be good enough for testing once it is released.
