This became a problem for me on upgrade to lucid - the machine started shuttdown when inactive for longer than the inactive period, rather than suspending.

Looking into the problem, it seems the GConf key “/apps/gnome-power-manager/actions/sleep_type_battery” is set to hibernate, rather than suspend (as it previously was). There is no way of setting this configuration option (or sleep_type_ac) from the GPM preferences in lucid, leading to confusing behaviour.

It seems that 2.28.1-0ubuntu5 may be responsible for the problem:
