Sleep not defined or settable in gnome-power-manager

In the "On Battery Power" tab, the term "sleep" in the first option is not defined anywhere not can it be defined. It used to be possible to say "Sleep means hibernate" or "Sleep means suspend". Now you can set it to "sleep" after some time but what that actually means is undefined.

Worse, in Hardy, by default the gconf key sleep_battery_type is set by default to "nothing" so this option for 99% of users who don't know about gconf is completely misleading and doesn't actually work at all.

This is in the latest version in Hardy as of this morning. I discovered this after I foolishly trusted gnome-power-manager to suspend my laptop when I went to bed. It did nothing even though it claimed it was going to "sleep" after 30 minutes.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. The issue that you reported is one that should be reproducible with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the development release - Intrepid Ibex. It would help us greatly if you could test with it so we can work on getting it fixed in the next release of Ubuntu. This became a problem for me on upgrade to lucid - the machine started shuttdown when inactive for longer than the inactive period, rather than suspending.

Looking into the problem, it seems the GConf key “/apps/gnome-power-manager/actions/sleep_type_battery” is set to hibernate, rather than suspend (as it previously was). There is no way of setting this configuration option (or sleep_type_ac) from the GPM preferences in lucid, leading to confusing behaviour.

It seems that 2.28.1-0ubuntu5 may be responsible for the problem:
