I have the same problem on a HP Compaq 8510p. I found it strange that the default settings were to "Do nothing" when battery power is critically low, so I changed it to "Hibernate".
Unfortunately this does not work, it just keeps going until the battery is drained.
I'm running the latest Ubuntu 8.04 x86_64 with kernel 2.6.24-19-generic.
Any ideas on how to solve this? Is this a known issue?
By the way, I also set the action to "Suspend" when the laptop lid is closed. This does not work either.
