This is the log of the battery running out when I am hardly using it (to keep the CPU at 600MHz). I still get no warnings or anything and the machine just dies.

This makes me think that something has changed since the RC. The RC gave me several warnings before Hibernating. I doubt that my battery has deteriorated that much over that time.
