I had this error on Gutsy, and in Hardy up to alpha5, on an Acer Travelmate 2451LCi Laptop

The time_policy workaround did nothing for me.

However.
The new alpha 6 has completely solved this issue for me, I get all notifications and computer shuts down automatically.
