It seems the best workarounds so far is either:
a) Reverted to an older compiz as described in #116 (disables Unity).
b) Use the command >> killall -9 "notification-area-applet" << and reload the applet when prompted. Do it a couple of times and hopefully the icon will appear.
Using compiz --replace does not seem to be any more effective than workaround b) and it takes considerably more time.
I would really like to see this fixed in Ubuntu Classic as Unity is quite useless as long as I get severe graphical glitches when minimizing a window.
