The update also seems to have reset the permissions on my optical drive so that my burning software no longer has permission to access the drive and seems to have ruined a disk that was in a drive with hardware and software designed to prevent just this from ever happening. kudos - the windowing system no longer reliably works and file permissions which had no reason to be touched at all were reset to nonsense values.
