Unfortunately I have been unable to find a possible cause for the bug you are experiencing on Karmic. However, I have been told by another bug triager (more experienced than I am) that the fact that this problem seems to be resolved in Lucid qualifies it for the "Fix Released" status. I'm sorry that I have not been able to find a workaround for you. If you begin to experience the bug again in Lucid at any point, then please feel free to let us know so we can try to address it!
