Hm, that doesn't seem to be the issue at hand. Well, one thing you could try is installing the latest version of gnome-panel on your Karmic install and seeing if that resvolves the issue. If it does, then we will at least know for sure that it is the gnome-panel package that is the problem. If you're interested, you can get the .deb here: https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+archive/primary/+files/gnome-panel_2.29.91-0ubuntu1_i386.deb . Afterwards we can always have you reinstall the Karmic version if it causes any problems.
