Using VMWare, create a basic PC suitable for ubuntu.
Install 8.10 on it.
Repeat the steps as indicated in the original report.

I'm thinking there must be some 'common' development package that you guys install that makes this error go away. Failing that its hardware specific which would be very strange for this kind of bug.
