I did a mv ~/.local ~/.local-old and logged out and back in, and the places bar works correctly now. So it's definitely something being changed in ~/.local
After switching the directory back and relogging in, I noticed that:
slash@helios:~/.local/share/applications$ more mimeapps.list
[Removed Associations]
application/x-bittorrent=userapp-wine-U3KPAU.desktop;
----EOF----
I'm presuming the "inode/directory=rhythmbox.desktop;audacious.desktop;" is line the curlprit.
Once I removed it, the places bar opens correctly now.
The question is how it got there, and why after doing a distribution upgrade.
Could the original submitter please submit their ~/.local/share/applications/mimeapps.list ?
