1. everything works fine when connected via cat5, so start up with that.
2. nm-applet shows in the tray as expected
3. click the nm-applet icon and select a wireless access point (i happen to be selecting one that is WPA protected).
4. after setting up the keyring association, click "allow access once" or "allow access always" and notice that the tray icon disappears.
