Bug Description

Binary package hint: udev

Until recently when I plugged in my ipod, an icon appeared on my desktop within a short amount of time. It was also automatically recognized by Amarok etc.

For some unknown reason, this has stopped working. When I plug in my ipod now, it starts displaying the "Do not disconnect" message as expected (meaning something has mounted its file system(s), but nothing appears on my desktop and I can not detect the ipod in its usual location ( /media/ANDERS JACO ) in Amarok.

Attached below the relevant extract from the syslog when I plug in the ipod:

I have experienced this as well - on the latest Gutsy, plugging in an iPod will display the "Do not disconnect" message, but the iPod won't appear on the desktop or in rhythmbox. However, if you open Nautilus and manually mount the iPod, everything appears to work fine. Hence, it does seem that Ubuntu is recognizing iPods - however, it is not mounting them by default as it did in the past.

Devs: Is there any recent changes in udev that could cause this? Is it by design that iPods are no longer mounted by default? If so, could this be reverted to the previous behavior?

Open "Computer" (Places-Computer in GNOME) and double-click the iPod device
icon (it will show up if the iPod is plugged in but the iPod will not be
mounted).

Bizarrely I plugged the ipod in now and the ipod got automounted and 'Music Player' started. Ah well... one of those things presumably... I'm assuming there's an option somewhere for NOT starting music player every time i connect a music player?

Cheers again!

And it stioll doesn't work for my other ipod, an 8 gig 2nd gen nano. Ipod gets recognized, shows up in Nautilus but can not be mounted with a right-click. Relevant syslog extract and screenshot attached.

Interestingly, my wife got her ipod automounted when she logged in (the ipod reported in above screenshot as not possible to mount even manually for me).

Looks like some more work needs to go into the consistency of handling of these devices, ideally (feature request) a friendly GUI allowing user to:
* get a notification when a new device has been connected
* select what to do with it (one-off and/or permanently, e.g. I'd prefer amarok than the default Gnome Music Player to be opened)
* manage users/permissions

This has just started happening to me as well. My ipod has been mounting fine for months from a hard drive install of Ubuntu 7.10 but now it does not. I later discovered that my DVD and CD ROM drives don't mount anymore either. I can manually mount the drives and ipod but they mount in a read only mode (expected for CDs and DVDs but not the ipod). I've made no changes to my system to cause this. The only thing I've done is run updates when they pop up.

@Henrik

I can confirm this too under Hardy. Under Gnome, the ipod shows up in the desktop but neither rhythembox or Amarok (which is my default) show up. Once I eject the ipod through nautilous, the partition is unmounted, but the drive isn't ejected, I have to manually do that to get the "Do not disconnect" window to show up.

when trying to force amarok to autodetect the devices, I get: "No new media devices were found. If you feel this is an error, ensure that the DBUS and HAL daemons are running and KDE was built with support for them. You can test this by running "dcop kded mediamanager fullList" in a Konsole window."

Running the suggestion says:
amelo@amelo-laptop:~$ dcop kded mediamanager fullList
/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/volume_uuid_890C_F46A
sdb2
ANDREW'S IP

true
/dev/sdb2
/media/ANDREW'S IP
vfat

media/removable_mounted
ipod_mount
false

If there's something you need further, I can provide it.

I have the same issue in Hardy. It happened the first time in Gutsy with the ppa packages from kubuntu-members-kde4.

I will try to track down this issue, tomorrow morning with a friend's iPod.... since Canonical still didn't sponsor me an iPod to ensure it is working at all times with Ubuntu Linux.

I initially had the ipod mount failure (heron upgraded from Gutsy upgraded from Feisty).

After I installed the "ipod" package it mounted (and brought up the wrong program, I haven't figured
out where the autorun settings moved to, it isn't under "Removable Drives and Media" anymore).

Just my $0.02...

I'm getting errors trying to mount my old iPod mini. It worked perfectly in Gutsy. I wiped out Gutsy and did a fresh install of Heron - running Gnome. I usually use hipo.

I spent my best part of today trying to figure out why this happens... I took my ipod to a friends system and he's using Hardy (32bit). The system works fine and the ipod launches Amarok (System->Preferences->Preferred Appliactions changed to launch Amarok when the ipod is plugged in. I'm using Ubuntu and not Kubuntu by the way...)

I brought the ipod back home (fresh install 64bit Hardy) and the ipod doesn't mount automatically. Right-clicking on the icon under "Computer" does not mount it either. However, if I install "pmount" and do:

pmount /dev/sdf3

The device mounts properly and Amarok recognizes it. So, I'm almost certain this has something to do with gvfs*.

Ah, under the Sessions control panel there is a session that's supposed to launch "gnome-volume-manager" like:

/usr/lib/gnome-volume-manager/gnome-volume-manager --sm-disable

However, this does not seem to be running, and running this by hand does nothing. I'm not sure if or how gvfs works with gnome-volume-manager. What I do know is that this is all getting to be too damn complicated. Usually complex systems break more often (and harder) than simpler ones!

Well, I think this is a good hint:

** (gnome-mount:3710): WARNING **: Caught exception 'Another client is already authenticating. Please try again later.'

I got this after I logged out, switched to a console. pkill -U all processes under my user name (from another user). Then went into /tmp and rm -fr * files as the user that's having the problems.

Once I logged in, I got the error mentioned above from ~/.xsession-errors.

Hope this helps somebody fix this problem.

The problem turned out to be with the USB 2 driver. The work around is to run sudo modprobe -r ehci_hcd
The problem is resolved when you upgrade the kernel
fixed in the 2.6.24-19-generic kernel of Hardy
