The "a" problem seems very easy to fix.
btw. another workaround: 1) mount it manually mkdir /media/tmp mount /dev/sd<letter><numeral> /media/tmp (e.g. mount /dev/sdb1 /media/tmp) 2) correct the mount point 3) umount/mount using gnome
