The Gnome devs in their arrogance and "wisdom" have given gnome-mines the same lack of visibility as everything else in the Gnome Desktop. People are starting to use displays that can show over a billion colours and the Gnome devs are trying to make everything entirely grey-and-slightly-darker-grey with no outline. It's awful, and, in this case, makes the application effectively unusable.

Correcting the bad decisions of the Gnome team, and making a distribution that was actually fit to be used by human beings, used to be what Ubuntu was all about. I hope they start doing that again.

You can get some washed-out colours, but not the previous gameplay behaviour, by using dconf-editor to set org.gnome.mines.theme to "classic". The Gnome devs even show the old version on their project page. The new version is just terrible.
