Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-media

Using Karmic.

How to reproduce :
1- Connect an USB audio device (for instance, an USB headset)
2- Open gnome-volume-control
3- Change volumes for microphone input & speaker
4- Disconnect device
5- Reconnect device

Expected results : the volume for both speaker and microphone should be restored as before disconnection
Actual results : the volume is restored to a predefined setting (determined at computer shut-down?)
Impact : before using Skype, for instance, one must always adjust volume settings before making a call

This bug is an upstream one and it would be quite helpful if somebody experiencing it could send the bug the to the people writing the software. You can learn more about how to do this for various upstreams at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Upstream/GNOME. Thanks in advance!

Message from upstream (the bug was closed as "not gnome") :

This is handled by PulseAudio.

Are you running PulseAudio? If yes, I suggest you report a bug to PulseAudio if
you have been running it with "module-device-restore" (see
http://pulseaudio.org/wiki/Modules#module-device-restore)
----

I am going to try to check if the module is enabled in Karmic, and if so if I can report a bug to PulseAudio as suggested.

Aw man, I'm glad I'm not crazy. I had reported a similar (identical?) issue back in august, but nobody except me seemed to be experiencing it; see bug #427520 (which also had its own upstream bug reports on gnome and pulseaudio)

Seb, this issue is not fixed with the new gnome-media package update. The volume of the devices are always reset to the base level when replugging them. And I don't see this issue mentionned in the changelog in comment #8.
