Problem is always reproducible:

right click the gnome-volume-control-applet and select sound preferences. In this app you cannot find any switches for headphone/speakers. This applet should contain the switches that are integrated under
gnome-volume-control --page=switches. An example can be found in the screenshot that was attached in a previous comment.
