Bug Description

[Impact]

 * GNOME Maps on focal no longer starts.

 * From the upstream report this is because the GNOME Maps
data provider no longer provides the satellite data
   that the app required.

   https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-maps/-/commit/22e32384f5d3623d8fdc8c330a0adcda3047cd7a

   Upstream bug report https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-maps/-/issues/382

 * GNOME Maps is a component of Ubuntu Budgie packageset. It's a universe package

[Test Plan]

 * Simply start the application on Focal. The application will not start.

 * Next enable the proposed repository via Update Manager - Settings

 * Via a terminal install the application

   gnome-maps

 * disable the proposed repository again via Update Manager - Settings. This is important so that you dont install any other test packages

 * Run gnome-maps via your chosen Desktop Environment - e.g. in Budgie - Menu - Maps

 * The application will open displaying a map

[Where problems could occur]

 * Confusion on behalf of the user because they may be used to seeing
   the Satellite View.

The patched gnome-maps disables Satellite View.

Note - in 21.04 and 21.10 versions of GNOME Maps, Satellite View is also not available. So this is not a regression, but for Focal users its an obvious visual change.

 * This fix applies the upstream commit that states that it resolves this matter. No other commits are mentioned on the upstream bug report.

 * I suppose the risk is that an additional commit may have been made upstream that upstream silently applied but did not show up in the patch report.

 * As such, the user testing this should be fairly familiar with gnome maps previously to confirm no additional regressions for the now working application i.e. previously the app did not run.

[Other Info]

 * Please note - on the upstream bug report, the maintainers state that the accepted fixed version of the 3.36 series is 3.36.7.

 * Focal is on 3.36.1. From a SRU point of view I would prefer if Focal was to move to the upstream maintainers recommended micro version release.

 * However, I don't see any test suite in the application source code. I'm not sure therefore that Ubuntu's SRU process would accept such a microrelease without an OK from a technical board member?

 * If such an exception is OK'd I'm happy to run through an uplift - possibly via a separate raised bug report - please advise.

Situation here exactly as dabaxter1950 describes. Gnome-maps used to work fine in Ubuntu 20.04, then since one system update the bug appeared.

Is there anyone working on a solution for Ubuntu 20.04 LTS?

(I am willing to help, I just can't code at all, unfortunately. If someone gives direction, I'd be glad to at least provide some info following it.)

I pulled the 3.38.2-1 .deb package from a Mint-Server and installed it via apt in Ubuntu 20.04.

It does work but the satellite map view is gone!

Can anyone confirm wether this feature is indeed missing in version 3.38.2-1?

Edit:

I just found out, that this feature has indeed been dropped by the Gnome team because of cost reasons. Very unfortunate!

Ok - I've taken the upstream patch and applied it to the focal version of gnome-maps.

Please can folks test this to confirm that this issue is resolved without regression in this area.

As far as I can gather, the commit removes the satellite view - this is the same in hirsute and impish versions of gnome-maps.

    sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntubudgie-dev/scratchy
    sudo apt install gnome-maps

If this is confirmed I will kick off the SRU process to get the fix reviewed by the SRU team and hopefully (if acceptable) released.

You might want to check in with seb128 at https://discourse.ubuntu.com/t/scope-of-gnome-mru/18041. Maybe gnome-maps would meet the definition he's driving. Figuring out the details of this is still in progress, so I suggest not waiting for that to be resolved first though.

Hello sally, or anyone else affected,

Accepted gnome-maps into focal-proposed. The package will build now and be available at https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-maps/3.36.1-1ubuntu1 in a few hours, and then in the -proposed repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation on how to enable and use -proposed. Your feedback will aid us getting this update out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug, mentioning the version of the package you tested, what testing has been performed on the package and change the tag from verification-needed-focal to verification-done-focal. If it does not fix the bug for you, please add a comment stating that, and change the tag to verification-failed-focal. In either case, without details of your testing we will not be able to proceed.

Further information regarding the verification process can be found at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/PerformingSRUVerification . Thank you in advance for helping!

N.B. The updated package will be released to -updates after the bug(s) fixed by this package have been verified and the package has been in -proposed for a minimum of 7 days.

The verification of the Stable Release Update for gnome-maps has completed successfully and the package is now being released to -updates. Subsequently, the Ubuntu Stable Release Updates Team is being unsubscribed and will not receive messages about this bug report. In the event that you encounter a regression using the package from -updates please report a new bug using ubuntu-bug and tag the bug report regression-update so we can easily find any regressions.
