Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and help make Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we cannot work on this bug because your description didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful to read 'How to report bugs effectively' http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures.

At a minimum, we need:
1. The specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the problem.
2. The behavior you expected.
3. The behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).

Thanks!

All relevant information is in the description; specifically, this:

see also https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gsmartcontrol/+bug/1873546

and I copy my latest comment from there, because it seems quite relevant here.

The hardware maintenance phase of 16.04 finished end Q1 2018.
The release date of the Kingston SA400S37 ssd was Q1 2017.
Therefore, the upstream decision from Debian maintainer, see
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/smartmontools/+bug/1858121
is within the bounds of the hardware maintenance phase.
Accordingly, update-smart-drivedb should be reinstated, backported from 18.04.

so is it a duplicate from the other report? is the issue the same about code 231? could you add a screenshot showing the issue?

I wouldn't know whether it a duplicate of https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gsmartcontrol/+bug/1873546, because it concerns two different utilities. Sure, they could both be using the same underlying resource which could be the one at fault, but I do not have sufficient knowledge about these matters, though on the basis of my reading on forums I suspect hddtemp as I mentioned in the description, but that is only my opinion.

The issue is also reported upstream https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-disk-utility/-/issues/136

it could be an issue in libatasmart which is basically unmaintained
